Dries Van Noten is the third generation in a family of skilled tailors and was introduced to the world of fashion at a very young age. At 18, Van Noten enrolled in the fashion design course at Antwerp’s Royal Academy and soon began working as a freelance designer for a Belgian manufacturer while finishing his studies. Upon graduation, Van Noten continued to freelance before producing his own collection of blazers, shirts, and trousers. This line launched in 1986 and was met with nearly immediate success. The first Dries Van Noten boutique opened in the same year—offering men’s and women’s collections in Antwerp. The company began expanding quickly, opening boutiques in cities including Paris, Milan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. A six-story, 60,000 sq ft industrial space located in Antwerp houses the showroom, design, marketing, production, and all other aspects of the Dries Van Noten line.
