The Alden Shoe Company is the only original New England shoe and bootmaker remaining. The company was founded in 1884 in Middleborough, Massachusetts by Charles H. Alden. After the introduction of a series of inventions in the mid-1800s, the New England shoe industry was born, allowing for an all-around improvement in product quality and consistency. During the early 1900s, Alden revolutionized the industry with their strategic bypass around the Great Depression. Instead of following the typical route of seeking low cost labor and materials far outside of the United States, they focused their attention on manufacturing high quality dress shoes (specifically, orthopedic and medical footwear). This was a period of intensive growth and development, forming the foundation of the high manufacturing standards they carry on today. Their shoes are all hand-stained and polished, using leather from the finest tanneries in the world. Alden remains a family-owned business, keeping their traditions of quality shoe-making alive.
